Anyone tested the new 512Mb RaspberryPi?

Did anyone have this "revision" of the board? I want to know if there are some performance/audio improvement. With 512Mb of RAM it will be more smooth and fast. Sadly i was preferring a new armv7 cpu instead of 512Mb of RAM....
With this upgrade lot of thing is changed in the .elf and ROM binary needed to bootup the board. So in the next days I'll release a new release of RPiTC with some minor(swappines and sysctl params) and major (vmware view client 1.6) updates.

  1. I'm supposed to receive one with 512Mb this week. I'll try with XBMC and let you know.

  2. Have you been keeping up with the various accelerated X development efforts? Simon seems to have his up and running, but not packaged yet - http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=4649&sid=8c538866b3a0404a05cb5c95d8518de9&start=200
    And the RPi foundation has also assigned a programmer to develop it.

    The GPU drivers have just been released, so I would posit a guess that progress can be made a whole lot faster :)

    I have the 512mb one and XBMC works great. Can't compare to 256 though couse this is my first RPi.

    I would like to test rpitc for a customer running a XenApp 6 VDI farm.

    Would it be possible to create a "easy" windows installer like the one rasbmc did?

    1. yes it's possible but i didn't have enough time to do that now, but if you start from a standard installation you can easily customize it (just dpkg-reconfigure keyboard, language, timezone, ip address etc).

  6. I just used an early 256 meg board as a thin client. I used rdesktop on the raspi to connect to a windows terminal server across a 100 Mb/s LAN. Initial login, email, and MS Office were OK. But web browsing was terrible. I hope a board with 512 ram and the new GPU drivers can help.

  7. I have the 512MB, since it's my first RPi I can't compare performance wise with the 256 MB. I'm using your RPI-TC to connect to my WIN7 virtual desktop with Citrix Receiver. Performance is ok, video works but audio falters (while working with WIN7) I'm also experiencing color banding issues, i.e. the color transition isn't smooth. Is this a known problem/limitation with the Pi or do I have a defective board?

    1. The color banding is also visible in Iceweasel, the tabs for instant have visible bands. So it isn't something that has to do with Citrix Receiver.

  8. man how do i contact you ? also u have tried out the linux KVM + Spice protocol combo its amazing. i have been asking devs for spice client on arm .apparently its now possible. mayb u could look into that. SPICE is comparable to PCoIP i think.

  9. I just used a 512MB type B board with RasBMC and I noticed it wasn't announcing beyond the 256MB. I will try your RPi-TC after I work out the best way to upgrade the firmware.

  10. I have trying to use raspberry pi as a thinclient for SPICE. before doing that i have tested SPICE functionality in real world and i have to say its amazing. I remotely SPICEd into a win xp machine running on kvm and gave it to a friend to use. my friend could not tell that it was virtual and remotely accessed over a network :D ,impressive indeed. Video streaming works good but there are still some lags issues and so with usb redirection. If we could get SPICE-gtk to work well on raspberry pi, this could well b a very very cost effective HD VDI solution to sell :P

    1. im waiting for a full X11 accelerated driver from RaspberryPi Team (i read in the forum that some ppl in Broadcom is already working on it). With that the performance improvement will be great and also SPICE client will be included on rpitc.

  12. I am using 'RPi-TC Final Release allclient 17 - sep -2012' with the 512MB board and it is ideal for my intended purpose. I have noticed that using the 'top' and 'free -m' commands indicate only 256MB are being used, will there be an update soon to address this or is there a way I can change this myself?

  14. I too would like to know how to make something autolaunch, its driving me a little mad atm, this project is fantastic and I am driving to launch it in the school I am on placement at as a bit of a project (we currently use HP thin clients), the last few things I want to do are as follows:

    I want to auto launch the Citrix ICA client, I have tried putting /opt/Citrix/ICAClient/wfcmgr -desc Desktop into rc.local and adding a sleep at the beginning to try and stop it running before the GUI is started up, any ideas?

    I'd also like a shortcut on the desktop for kids to relaunch if they close the ICA window so then I can remove the right click menu so they don't have access to anything but the ICA connection, but I am sure there is a way to get the system to check if the ICA is open and if not automatically open it.

    Lastly, how would I go about giving the system a new name other than the standard one the img ships with? we use monitoring software that is only really effective when the terminals are named so teaching staff can see where the computer they are monitoring is,

    Please bare in mind that my linux knowledge is basic at best, so I may need baby steps,
